Women in History: 7th Annual Distinctive Women in Hawaiian History Program

Did you know lei makers in Hawai‘i applied their special skills into making camouflage nets to help with the war effort during WW II? 

Learn more about their amazing contributions as well as the roles women played in WW II Hawai‘i at the 7th Annual Distinctive Women in Hawaiian History Program taking place Sun., Aug. 25, at the Hawai‘i Convention Center from 8 AM to 5 PM. 

Registration is open for the 7^th annual Distinctive Women in Hawaiian History Program presented by the Hawaiʻi Council for the Humanities. 

This year's theme, World War II Hawaiʻi, looks at this complex era from the perspective of women who transformed their communities and families through personal sacrifice, remarkable resiliency, and found unashamed joy and freedom in dramatically altered social norms that unleashed new found friendships- between women, military personnel, and war workers. Attendees are treated to:

• Debut of The Taps Symphony
• Korean American women’s activism in response to the Japanese occupation of Korea
• Kamehameha Schools' debut of Hawaiian Lei Sellers contributions as camouflage net makers
• Military nursing during the attack across O‘ahu
• Jazz performers examine how music shaped the era while broaching the unseemly racial segregation of Honolulu’s WWII entertainment scene
• WWII women military pilots are bridged to contemporary Hawai‘i by legacy pilots
• Japanese American internment survivor shares a life trajectory where forgiveness was essential
• Legendary Hawaiian songstress Marlene Sai, with dance innovator Kumu Hula Michael Pili Pang, and iconic Hālau Hula Ka Noʻeau feature the music and hula style prevalent during wartime.
