NCHE Chair-elect: We Need a STEM-Like Initiative for History

Associate Professor of History Linda K. Salvucci is associate the chair elect of the National Council for History Education. The NCHE's office in Maryland has alerted us to this commentary by her that appears in the History News Network.

"We need a STEM-like (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) initiative for history, to rescue current and future generations of American from historical ignorance," writes professor Salvucci. "We, as a people and a nation, have to pay attention not merely to standards and textbooks but also to teacher preparation and professional development. Revenue-strapped school districts cannot be expected to go it mostly alone in guaranteeing that all students have access to a quality education in U.S. history; the federal government must take the lead in turning around shortcomings in student performance."
